SPATIAL VARIABILITY OF THE TEMPERATURE AND HUMIDITY INDEX IN RIO GRANDE DO SUL - BRAZIL FOR DIFFERENT SEASONS OF THE YEAR

ABSTRACT: This study aims to analyze the spatial variability of the temperature and humidity index (THI) in Rio Grande do Sul (RS) for the four seasons of the year. The study was conducted for forty-two municipalities in the state, for which the average THI was calculated from hourly temperature and relative humidity data registered by automatic weather stations of the INMET in the period from 2000 to 2020. Once the spatial dependence was detected, the thematic map of the spatial distribution of the variable was produced by means of ordinary kriging for the four seasons of the year. In the summer, most of the state’s territory had THI> 70, indicative of caloric discomfort, which must be evaluated for each category of animal production. On the other hand, in the western border and metropolitan region, the THI greater than 72 shows that there is heat stress, implying the need for environmental conditioning practices to reduce heat. In autumn and winter, most of the territory-presented THI between 56 and 60, it is indicative of cold discomfort and, in the extreme south of Rio Grande do Sul, the THI lower than 54 represents cold stress in winter, implying the need for environmental conditioning practices for the mitigation of the cold. While, in the spring, the THI between 62 and 68 shows that there is thermal comfort for most animals of zootechnical production and for humans. Thus, the observation of the spatial and temporal variability of the THI in RS is important for the adoption and management of assertive environmental thermal conditioning practices.

Keywords: precision ambience, geostatistics, thermal comfort.
}, number={2}, journal={ENERGIA NA AGRICULTURA}, author={Oliveira, Zanandra Boff and Zwick Radons, Sidinei and Leonel Bottega, Eduardo and Knies, Alberto Eduardo}, year={2021}, month={ago.}, pages={249–260} }
