Abstract

The edible mushroom Pleurotus ostreatus secretes lignocellulolytic enzymes, so that several agricultural residues can be used for its cultivation, but studies on the use of malt bagasse as substrate for the cultivation of this mushroom are lacking. The study aimed to evaluate the use of malt bagasse in different proportions (S1=0%, S =10%, and S3=20%) for the cultivation of two P. ostreatus strains (MB and SB). The evaluation criteria were the chemical characterization of the substrates, the mass and the number of bunches produced. An average mass of 163.70 g was obtained for the SB strain and 121.70 g for the MB strain. The average number of bunches was 22.66 for the SB strain and 17.54 for the MB strain. As for substrate, an average mass of 196.08 g for S1, 154.20 g for S2 and 77.81 g for S3 was obtained. The average number of bunches was 28.62, 19.50 and 12.18 for substrates S1, S2 and S3, respectively. The results suggest that substrate supplementation with malt bagasse may affect substrate chemical characteristics. Supplementation with up to 10% malt bagasse is a viable alternative for P. ostreatus cultivation. The SB strain obtained agronomic performance superior to the MB strain.
