1 RESUMO

ORGANIC LOADING AND CATIONS RETENTION IN FILTERS OPERATING WITH SWINE WASTEWATER
2 ABSTRACT
Pollutants removal from residual water can be done through physical, chemical and biological processes. Physical processes such as filtration can be used as a highly efficient alternative in removing suspended total solids. As filtering material for the treatment of residual water, sugarcane bagasse and Soil (Dystrophic Red Nitosol) were used. The filtering materials were characterized regarding each column density and its chemical composition. Filtration columns were constituted of 100 mm diameter and 1 m long PVC tubes. The material was placed in the columns until 0.90 m high suffering compression. The experiment was arranged in a randomized block design with eight treatments with two filtering materials and four different rates of swine wastewater (4.960, 9.930, 14.900 and 19.860 m3 ha-1) and three replications per treatment. The filter composed of sugarcane bagasse showed good efficiency, 77,8% in Ca and 56,2% Mg removal compared with the soil. It was observed an increase of Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) of the filtered material in relation to the swine wastewater. The soil presented excellent retention reaching 100% absorption for Cu and 83% for Zn.
